Examples of underwater architecture
The ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface
Submerged buildings are becoming more popular in city planning, and it’s no surprise why: the ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface. Although underwater habitats have been around since the 1960s, they were only employed for marine research until the last decade when they exploded in popularity as hotels, restaurants, and museums. While many of these tourism and hospitality endeavors are designed to provide visitors with an experience unlike anything they may have on dry ground, some of them also serve important societal functions. When asked about designing a subterranean restaurant off the coast of Norway, Snhetta architect and project manager Rune Grasdal told in 2019 that the concept was “quite exciting.”
As a consequence of these discussions, Under, a five-star restaurant located under the Atlantic Ocean in Lindesnes, was created. He had previously said that “the facility was intended to be utilized as a restaurant but also would play a significant role as a marine research center.” Though the idea of underwater architecture is still in its infancy, its potential is boundless. Takes a look at nine stunning examples of undersea architecture that are still open to the public today.
