What Is Modern Architecture?
The modern architects of the 20th century came from the era when human-made crafts were replaced by machine-made production. The goal of “modern architecture” is to create buildings that are based on how humans live, rather than what they find. This architecture is not sentimental, like revivalist styles. Instead, it is innovative, experimental, and minimal.
There are many styles of architecture in the US that date back to 1930 through 1970. Some examples are Expressionist, Constructivist and Mid-Century Modern.
History
The modern architecture movement has grown over the years, with many different styles, and it isn’t easy to find out what it was based on. The style is composed of several sub-styles that span a 60-year time frame. One side thinks that the transition and the modern techniques are the base of this architecture. To others, those earlier styles served as inspiration for more “pure,” mid-century modern architects.
Modern designers come from the thought that “form should follow function” Louis Sullivan designed buildings for the 1893 Chicago World Fair. This motto became an underlying principle of modern architecture.
Other famous pioneers of modern architecture are Frank Lloyd Wright, Staatliches Bauhaus, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier.
In the 1930s, the design world looked like the 1920s and was dubbed International Style. It was only after an architecture exhibit by Philip Johnson in 1932 that this design style came about.
Modern architecture usually covers the period between the late 19th century and mid-20th century, but buildings in this design style were still built up until the later half of the 20th century.
Characteristics
It’s easy to miss out on the wonderful architecture that surrounds you, but these are some of the more common elements that can be found in many different types of modern buildings.
The clean lines of the painting make it easy for a viewer to develop an appreciation for the simplicity and straightforwardness of its subject matter.
Modern roofs with overhangs
From the outside, you may not guess it but once you step inside, the abundance of glass creates a bright office space. One of the reasons for this is that the windows are large and allow in a lot of natural light.
The modern architecture emphasizes form over function, which is why open and well-defined floorplans are so popular. A good place to find this would be in homes with large, spacious rooms that flow into each other.
Modern and traditional homes rely on a variety of building materials, the most common of which are steel, concrete blocks, iron, and glass. In contrast to modern switches in the building industry, brick and stone were usually used for more classical constructions to show off their textures.
We pay close attention to how buildings are situated, as well as how they complement the natural environment.
Asymmetrical designs. These modern architects played with large, smooth shapes and asymmetrical layouts to create clean, uncluttered spaces that lacked any unnecessary decoration.
Essentially, the predominant design theme is focused on keeping ornamentation to a bare minimum.
Earlier styles of modern architecture still had some use of ornamentation. For instance, Frank Lloyd Wright would incorporate art glass windows so that no additional artwork was needed. Beyond that, modern architecture is mostly analytical and unadorned.
Contemporary architecture is contemporary, whereas modern architecture is timeless.
To some people, modern and contemporary architecture are the same thing. However, modern architecture was inspired by an art movement known as Modernism and continued through the 1960s. Contemporary architecture incorporates past eras’ architectural styles – like postmodernism which started in the 1970s and lasted until 2000. In short, contemporary architecture is reflective of styles in this current moment, which happen to be very diverse.
With aesthetics in modern homes starting to wane, we now know that cold homes create an unpleasant atmosphere.
Modern houses were revolutionary in that they embraced the idea of “free-flowing space,” rejecting clutter and excess belongings. Modern architects, however, questioned this strict ideology during the design period. This evolution in design brought on more contemporary designs that incorporated ornamentation and color. Modern homes now offer open floor plans with an element of privacy.
In summary, modern architecture began in the early 1900s and ended around the 1960s. One of its basic principles, form following function, means that designs should be based on what they’re supposed to do. For example, a kitchen should have storage space so it’s easier to clean up after cooking. Eventually, modern principles became too cold for everyday living due to an excess of space and the stark nature of the building materials.
